BioSciences at Rice is home to undergraduate and doctoral degree programs in Biochemistry & Cell Biology and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. We also participate in multidisciplinary degree programs in Biological Science, Environmental Science, and Neuroscience, as well as professional science master’s programs in Bioscience & Health Policy and Environmental Analysis. We are investigating fundamental properties of living organisms and impacts on the future quality of life on earth. Our research spans animal behavior, biochemistry, biophysics, cancer biology, cell biology, computational biology, conservation biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, microbiology, neurobiology, plant biology, signal transduction, structural biology, synthetic biology, and systems biology. Our faculty members play prominent positions in diverse scientific organizations and have received national and international recognition for their research and mentoring accomplishments.
The Rice University Department of BioSciences condemns the recent and ongoing insidious acts of racism, hate, violence, and police brutality in this country against the Black community, which are stark reminders of the systemic racism that has plagued our nation since its founding. As a department we express unified solidarity with President Leebron and Provost DesRoches to combat the racism, discrimination, and inequality, which not only permeate our society but occur in academia as well. Although we recognize we have substantial work to do, we are firmly committed to work towards Rice University’s stated goals of expanding and supporting diversity and fostering inclusiveness initiatives across our campus, classrooms, and research. We recognize and celebrate the contributions of diverse perspectives, ideas and backgrounds in all our endeavors. We commit ourselves to creating welcoming, safe spaces in our teaching, in the laboratory, in field sites, at conferences, with our staff, and across academia. And we invite feedback and conversations so that we can continue to do better.
